A Glam White Party and the correct 'antidote'
Living in the Mediterranean you choose a naturally imperfect habitat. I love Mallorca and its versatility of beautiful beaches, mountain ranges, the picturesque countryside and the busy city of Palma. By all means there is luxury to experience but it is rather subtle compared to other places in the world.
However with Nikki Beach opening its doors a couple of years ago Mallorca has gained a place of absolute extravagance with the legendary White and Red Party being the most popular events of the year. Needless to say that as a mother of two I like a good excuse to dress up and go out.
My husband and I booked a lounge area with a couple of friends and enjoyed the fantastic views of the futuristic and vaudeville like show. We danced the night away, zipping Champagne and G&Ts and danced to some really good house music played by DJ Tanja la Croix. I guess we splurged with an urge at this see and be seen event which once per year is absolutely ok, don’t you think ;-)?!
…Well, if it hadn’t been for the morning after! The reflection in the mirror had nothing to do with the person I was the night before: Red, puffy eyes topped off with pail and dull skin – not to mention the miserable state the rest of my body was in! So along with promising that reflection to never party like that again, I decided to grant myself a little detox day. Here is what I did:
12hr Skin & Body Detox
1. Counteract facial swelling and increase blood-flow
Heat water in a kettle to 80-100°C and fill up a small ceramic bowl to keep the heat as long as possible. Let it steep for 10 minutes. This way we make sure that the tea contains as much of the powerful antioxidant EGCG as possible to fight free radicals in the skin and to help cell regeneration. The long steeping time also ensures that the solution contains more tanning agent which helps fight inflammation and reduces the pore size as well as the sebum production.
The water still has to be slightly hot when you take it to the bathroom. Fill the bathroom sink with very cold water. You may even add some ice cubes. Put a washcloth into the tea solution, rinse and put it onto your face for 30 seconds, then immediately dip your face into the cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat this alternating bath 3 – 4 times. Make sure to end with a rinse of cold water. This alternating bath increases the blood-flow and fights facial swelling. Finish off by applying your moisturiser. (see CAVANCE Daycream and Sensitive Support) Your skin immediately looks reenergized – while your body is lagging behind. If you’re really brave you can also take an alternating shower – starting with warm water and ending with cold water. I have to feel very bad though, until I dare have one of those!
2. BODY DETOX
Now that you feel a bit more alive it’s time to dare the walk to the fridge. Since the night before your body lost water and important minerals and it is probably over-acidified, eating alkaline food for a day can be very helpful. The idea of the alkaline diet is to rid your body of its over-acidity and shift it into a ph-neutral, slightly alkaline state. It basically consists of seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as most nuts and seeds and it excludes animal derived products such as dairy, eggs, meat and fish. Of course 24 h are not enough to achieve that but they are a good way to remineralize and flush toxins from your body. Keep drinking loads of water throughout the day (at least 2 l). I am sure that at the end of day you will feel good enough to break that promise you made to the mirror before…
SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS RECIPES FOR YOUR DETOX DAY
Bowl of fresh cut fruit with chia seeds, ground linseed or chopped almonds
Wash and chop a green salad of your choice. Two hands full of cooked, 1 sweet pepper which you cut into small cubes, 1 carrot, also shredded, a few halved cocktail tomatoes and a handful of fresh mint. Mix everything together.
For the dressing mix 100 ml of lemon juice, 70 ml of apple juice, ½ onion, a hint of maple syrup and 1 tablespoon of olive oil and mix with your choice of herbs.
Sweet potato fries with Guacamole dip (for 2)
Sweet Potato Fries:
- 500 g sweet potatoes
- 4 tablespoons cold-pressed olive oil
- 1 pinch of ground cumin
- 1 small pinch of sea salt
- a little turmeric
- some paprika powder
- 1/2 bunch of fresh chives
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Peel the potatoes and cut into sticks. Take a large bowl and prepare the marinade. Mix oil, cumin, sea salt, turmeric and some paprika powder. Add the sweet potato sticks and mix. Put the potato sticks on a tray lined with baking paper (a casserole dish is also possible) and place it on the middle rail of the oven. In the meantime, wash the chives and pat dry. Then cut into fine rolls. Bake the sweet potato fries in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. At the end of the cooking time, serve the fries on a plate.
- 1 large ripe tomato
- 3 avocados (very ripe but not bruised)
- juice of 1 large lime
- handful of coriander
- 1 small red onion, finely chopped
- 1 finely chopped chilli (if you prefer it less spicy, leave it away or replace with bell pepper powder)
Mix all ingredients and put one avocado stone into the Guacamole until you’re ready to serve it. The stone will keep the guacamole from turning brown. (Fantastic proof of the anti-oxidative effect of the avocado stone by the way.) Enjoy
